Article summary

5.1 There are 2 main considerations with access panels – the type and location.

5.2 First and foremost determine the number, size and location of all access panels by coordinating the services requirements – plumbing, air-conditioning.

5.3 Next ensure the access panels do not clash with other ceiling fixtures – lights, speakers, smoke detectors

5.4 Finally there are several types of access panels –

5.4.1 Flush-set panels (high quality),

5.4.2 flanged access panels (medium quality),

5.4.3 drop in access panels (low quality - domestic), and

5.4.4 snap in access panels (low quality – usually for small (200 x 200 or less) inspection openings inside a joinery cupboard for example.

5.5 When ordering the locking mechanism, there are a number of options – budget lock (keyed lock), flat head screw and recessed square key.

5.6 The flat head fixing system is flawed in that the paint on the screw head is worn off the first time the panels is used, where the recessed square drive allows the key to open the access panel to be used without touching the painted face of the panel.

5.7 ALWAYS procure a sample of the proposed / specified access panels for signoff by the architect/client PRIOR to installation
