Article summary

General

6.1 Selection of the correct lining material is critical to the performance of the lining in each application.

6.2 Considerations include;

• Location of the material – internal or external, exposed to weather or covered and protected? Cyclonic area or non-cyclonic
• Moisture resistance – is the lining prone to moisture and or water
• Detailing – flush-set, or recessed shadow-line joint profile, or battened butt joints?
• Applied finishes – painted (flat, texture/gloss?), tiles, stone
• Fire and acoustic (refer separate policy)
• Impact considerations on the wall lining

Wet Areas

6.3 Refer separate policy “Waterproofing internal areas” for details of sheeting material selection for wet areas.

6.4 Water resistant board is only allowed in residential units or similar low use areas where the applied finish is paint/skirting tiles. All other locations will be constructed using villaboard.

6.5 Setting and base compounds will be internal wet area compounds. All screw heads, joints and holes must be set prior to waterproofing.

Interior Linings

6.6 Whilst plasterboard might be ideal for a living room of a home, it won’t work in a service corridor for a shopping centre, or in a mental health facility – so consideration of potential/expected IMPACT loads to determine the most suitable lining for application.

6.7 Generally, plasterboard is a low impact/domestic product that can support lightweight applied finishes like tiles. Villaboard is more robust and water/moisture resistant being cement sheeting – however achieving a good finish on flush-set exposed villaboard is more difficult. Villaboard is more ideal for high impact areas and external areas (see below).

Exterior Linings

6.8 Plasterboard will not be used outdoors under any circumstances. This includes protected, semi-protected and unprotected areas.

6.9 All external linings/claddings will be an externally rated fibre cement sheeting such as Hardiflex/CSR, compressed sheet, villaboard (soffits only)

6.10 Setting and base compounds will be external wet area compounds.
