Precast concrete elements have been an important part of the construction industry for a long time providing structural, non-structural, fire resistance, weatherproofing and architectural solutions to buildings.
There are unique elements of precast that require careful consideration to ensure the works are correctly completed to the required level of quality and compliance.
This guide provides an overview of precast but the most important parts are;
• Preplanning the design to ensure all design criteria are considered
• Tolerances for the works to be accommodated in the design
• Grouting installed correctly to achieve loadbearing and fire resistance levels – correct grout selection, compacted properly (no voids)
• Connections installed correctly to ensure the works are structurally adequate
• Sealant installed with correct backing rod, primer and in correct shape - failure results in leaks and water damage
