Article summary

Supervision means you checking the works are completed correctly.

“The standard you walk past is the standard you accept”

It requires you to not just be looking at the works but seeing what’s right and what’s wrong. Seeing what needs to happen and then making it happen – leading without compromise and not allowing or following someone’s mistake.

Using the planning in place including the various documents, Weekly PPC meetings and Support Teams, the Project Teams control quality constantly with understanding and vigilance.

If you are not certain of what you are looking at, or need to see, there are resources on Hutchies’ Toolbox and experienced support resources at Hutchies to help including people from:
• the Project Team
• your Team including Team Quality people
• other Teams including Team Quality people (Quality Champions)
• the Quality Team
• the Design Management Team
• the Services Team
• the Façade Team
• the Operations Team

Under all contacts we are the ‘experienced and competent contractor’ and are expected to be in control of the works to identify any issues and ensure they are picked up along the way. Sometimes the issues that come to light are complex and it’s hard for any one supervisor to accept the position that it’s Hutchies’ problem.

It’s important to understand that this definition is not about you alone. It does not mean you are inexperienced or incompetent – it’s not about you personally!

It’s referencing Hutchies – and at over 110 years of experience on over 4000 projects and Project Teams have many internal resources to assist.

To supervise quality well you need to have a clear picture of what the work is, when it’s happening and what exactly you need to be checking. It requires you to:
• Bring energy, direction, high standards and leadership to the troops on the ground
• Be fully across the project documentation and QMP.
• Use the Project Quality Schedule to ensure critical quality inspections occur
• Be onsite - you cannot supervise quality successfully from the site office
• Ensure the right environment is in place for the works to be completed properly
• Ensure sufficient time and resources are available to do the work
• Ensure any measuring or testing equipment like Wet and Dry Film Thickness (DFT) testers and moisture meters are in good working order, calibrated and onsite at all times required.
• Have detailed project specific ITPs loaded to your device and use them as a part of checking
• Forward plan any external inspections by engineers, suppliers and other people involved and get written acceptance the works are acceptable
• Raise incorrect works/defects and make sure they are addressed and closed out before they are covered up by other works
• Crefully supervise the trades, their methodologies and the product they are producing every day- when changes to management, supervision or tradesmen occur, the quality control may suffer as the knowledge of the prototypes and critical elements to check needs to be transferred effectively
• Bring any issues to the table as early as possible to deal with them:
– no procrastination
– no shortcuts
– no excuses
– no loose ends
Good quality requires you to be on the ball and in control.

You need to put your hand up if you’re unsure or have any roadblocks so we can provide help as early as possible to reduce/mitigate the impact.
