Article summary

6.1 Windows/doors need as much help as they can get to remain waterproof.

6.2 Windows in many cases have an eaves overhang to provide some relief/protection from rain. Where there is limited or no protection, where the window or door is EXPOSED to rain – it should be provided with a “head flashing” or “hood” over the window to minimise the water that is directed at the head of the window or door. Window head flashings will extend past the outer edge of the jamb a minimum of 100mm unless manufacturer’s details allow a lesser distance.

6.3 In the case of external timber doors, the water that sits on the top of the door rots the door in very little time.
